A kettlebell (KB) is a traditional Russian cast iron weight that looks like a cannonball with a handle. As the 1986 Soviet Weightlifting Yearbook put it, “It is hard to find a sport that has deeper roots in the history of our people than kettlebell lifting.” “Not a single sport develops our muscular strength and bodies as well as kettlebell athletics,” wrote Ludvig Chaplinsky in Russian magazine Hercules in 1913.
Pavel Tsatsouline brought kettlebells to the west in his training of special operation forces. His vision and courses have single handedly created the resurgence in recent years. The explosion is global. Years past, KB training was kept to elite groups of athletes and paramilitary. Now the same training has begun making its way up mainstream. It is hard work with real results, that’s the secret behind kettlebell training. As Pavel put it, “The one arm snatch is the Tsar of kettlebell lifts, fluid and viscious. It will even humble studly powerlifters.”
